Granite Staters, visitors expecting a big July
4th weekend
MANCHESTER - The holiday weekend was off to a leisurely start Friday downtown, where people were enjoying the balmy weather and preparing for Independence Day celebrations.
It was especially quiet at Arms Park, where a few couples strolled by the Merrimack River or enjoyed a shady spot before the Millyard park started filling before the evening concert and fireworks display.
"We really didn't have any particular fireworks plans," said Jim Okvist, who was at the park with his wife, Linda, and their Wheaten terrier named Kacey. "Normally we would have the family together, but the kids are all going to the other in-laws this year so we're just hanging in the hood for the weekend."
The couple actually drove north from Litchfield to walk Kasey along the river and the pup was raring to go.
"She's five-months old and she's lots of trouble," Jim said with a grin.
The Okvists picked a good day for the walk and were still considering what to do next. Linda Okvist said they planned to go out to dinner later and possibly take catch some fireworks, but only after getting Kasey home and safe away from the noise.
An annual part of the Fourth of July is advisories from veterinarians and animal shelters warning people to secure their pets, which generally don't like the loud noises and can get spooked easily by fireworks.
"Maybe we'll try and find fireworks and take them in - with her at home," Linda Okvist said.

Later in the day just before we went to dinner, I went back to the park to retrieve Kacey’s water bowl. I ran across a man with a seven month old male Wheaten Terrier. That dog was clearly soft coated, noticibaly bigger than Kacey and he had his adult Wheaten coloring. Here is the iPhone pic that I took of him:
He also was much calmer than Kacey!
Kacey by breed is a soft coated Wheaten but clearly she sports the Irish coat.
